Mission Partners
First Presbyterian is linked with the
following PCUSA missions:
- Ceara Presbytery Partnership— East Iowa Presbytery has an international partnership with Ceara Presbytery, located in northeast Brazil. This partnership includes opportunities for visits between Brazil and Iowa and to provide support for projects in Ceara. Five members of our congregation have visited Ceara on three different trips.
- Children
Of Bethlehem—a program for children
who have been affected by HIV/AIDS in Brazil .
- The
Christian Mission Hospital in Bangladesh—run
by Doctors Les and
Cindy Morgan.
- Church World Service—is the relief, development, and refugee assistance ministry of 36 Protestant, Orthodox, and Anglican denominations in the United Stastes. Working in partnership with indigenous organizations in more than 80 countries, CWS works worldwide to meet human needs and foster self-reliance for all whose way is hard.
- Diseases of Poverty—health outreach in Africa dealing
with many issues
including the AIDS epidemic, which is ravishing the continent.
- The Medical Benevolence Foundation—partnership with the PC(USA), that raises support for international health programs, recruits short-term colunteers, and facilitates collection and shipment of medical supplies and equipment overseas.
- Presbyterian
Border Ministry—an Evangelical/Outreach
program along the United States - Mexico Border.
- Sabeel—a Human Rights/ Peacemaking program in
the Middle East.
First Presbyterian is linked with the following local missions:
- The Ecumenical Community Center (ECC)— was founded in 1994 by a task force of churches located along Third Avenue SE in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. It became incorporated as a non-profit organization in 1995. Created with a vision to provide better community living, the ECC offers services to people throughout Cedar Rapids and Linn County. The ECC consists of different programs which are intended to serve the community:
CompuPlace (a resource that provides a computer resource to individuals with disabilities.)
Helping Hands Ministry (provides material assistance, referrals, and/or supportive ministry to persons in emergency need in collaboration with local agencies and faith communities in Linn county.)
Agency Housing (provides independent living with affordable rents for low-income tenants.)
