| "Lord,
when was it that we saw you a stranger and welcomed you?" - Matthew 25:38 Helping Hands MinistryHelping Hands Ministry (HHM) is part of the Ecumenical Community Center, located at 1035 Third Ave. SE. Organized by 11 downtown area churches, Helping Hands Ministry was designed to be a central location where people in need of help can go. Persons who come to First Presbyterian Church with a request for help are asked to go to Helping Hands. With one staff person and seven volunteers, Helping Hands Ministry fields an average of 400 phone calls each month. They do face to face interviews, verify stories, and make appropriate referrals to resources available in the community. When financial assistance is given, it is always in the form of a voucher, or a check sent directly to the vendor. HHM strives to reach a balance between being responsible stewards of the resources given, and still approach every person requesting help with compassion, trust and dignity. Typically, HHM is able to assist an average of 40 individuals or families per month. Help generally comes in the form of assistance with rent or utilities, or vouchers for gas or minor car repairs. Helping Hands Ministry receives money from First Presbyterian Church through the Local Missions budget. To contact Helping Hands Ministry, call Kathy Estle, Program Director, at 366-2651 |
